GreatSchools Announces Winners of Golden Apple Award for Best Learning Toys 2010

Golden Apple Award winners are well designed, fun, and invite active learning

San Francisco, CA — November 10, 2010 — Just in time for the holidays, GreatSchools’ Golden Apple Awards for best learning toys of 2010 offers parents a trusted source for great new toys that inspire learning — and fun.  Available now on GreatSchools.org, the list will help busy parents find carefully vetted educational toys without having to wade through conventional holiday toy reviews wondering which of them have real learning value.

The Golden Apple Award is given to toy companies for toys made within the last year for specific age categories. GreatSchools has over a decade of experience helping parents find the best schools and educational resources for their children.

“As a mother of two kids and Executive Editor at GreatSchools, I have evaluated literally hundreds of toys and I know that finding a great learning toy can be very difficult without spending a small fortune. I am very excited about the first Golden Apple Award best learning toy winners because they offer parents so many ways to support their kids learning in fresh, fun ways,” states Carol Lloyd, Executive Editor at GreatSchools.

A mix of high-tech and traditional, these toys offer a range of educational approaches: from the old school academics of the Flashmaster and the Leapfrog Tag to the creative problem solving of Creationary and Ant-o-Sphere 8-Pod, there’s something here for every child.

Our process

The Golden Apple toy evaluation criteria are based on over a decade of GreatSchools’ expertise about how parents can support their children’s education. Out of 23 toy manufacturing companies’ toy submissions, GreatSchools chose the most promising products for testing by families with children in the target age. GreatSchools staff of educational and parent experts then evaluated the products for functionality, design, safety and learning potential, incorporating the opinions of the test families.

Our Wildcard winner is a product nominated by one of our test families and chosen by our experts as a toy offering exceptional learning opportunities for children. “In inventing the FlashMaster®, I acted on the assumption that children are motivated and even entertained more and longer by a sense of true accomplishment than by any game-like reward,” exclaims Chuck Resor, the inventor of the FlashMaster®.

These winning learning toys are affordable, well designed, and reflect a wide range of children’s interests -- from art projects and crafts to hi-tech math and reading toys.  Prices range from $10 to $70.
